Dream Islands

What do dreams tell us?

Last night, I didn’t dream. Or at least, I did not remember the dreams. Scientists say we dream every night, but we just don’t remember it. I’m skeptical. Can we be sure that we perceive the dream at all? Maybe our brain is “dreaming” but we do not perceive it. Has it really happened?

We come to the question of consciousness and what it means to perceive things. Free will. Choices. Being in control of your own life.

I see my life as an island, filled with places to go, people to meet, and things to do. On the beaches, the water slowly rises, filling in areas I once knew, and cutting off places I could have gone. Sometimes, new islands form from the old. My life in Hong Kong was once part of the island. Now, it’s a separate place I still see in the distance. I could go back there, if I wanted to. It would just take more effort.

One day, if I have kids and marry someone, say, from Spain, that island will sink beneath the waves.

But all islands sink and the area I have to walk on is getting smaller. When I’m old, I’ll have to swim. But it won’t save me from drowning.
