A+ A-

california summer

We had just started dating and I had just returned from my summer trip. We lived in a rented room in Davis, California, and the sun had dried the earth. Every day it was hot, and the drought meant that the afternoon was a time for naps.

We lay together in bed, giddy at our reunion. In the morning, she would walk to her internship and I rode a borrowed bike to a coffee shop. I was working on a very important project I have since entirely forgotten. But it seemed important at the time. I was living off of savings and dreams of what the future could be like.

I biked to Trader Joes and got lentils, broccolini, port, and a cheese tray. We’d eat under the declining sun in their small fenced-in garden. We had two roommates…

Now the song that was playing in the café that reminded me of that time is over, so I’ll stop writing about these things.
